What effect does time have on your teeth? The role that time plays with your oral health is very similar to the role it plays with the rest of your body. Although there are many things you can do to slow the effects of time, no matter what you do, your teeth and gums will wear down. Fortunately, with the proper lifestyle and daily cleaning habits, your set of permanent teeth can last you well for your entire lifetime.
When brushing your teeth, always use a brush with soft bristles. This ensures you won’t damage your teeth or cause excess wear and tear to your gums. If you have dentures, always soak them every night in a denture solution or plain water. Make sure they are clean before inserting them back into your mouth every morning. If manually brushing is too difficult for you, try switching to an electric toothbrush. If manually flossing is too difficult for you, try using an alternative interdental tool such as a water flosser.
Beyond the standards of cleaning and caring for your teeth, be mindful of the foods and drinks you consume as well as your daily habits, especially the bad ones. Because your teeth will naturally weaken over time, chipping, cracking, or fracturing your teeth with hard foods becomes a greater risk. Exercise caution when biting into foods and remove any bad habits which increase your risk for oral health failure. This includes smoking, drinking alcohol, and using drugs, even recreational ones.
