Can You Whiten Your Teeth with Lemons or Apple Cider Vinegar?

Many patients come to us asking about teeth whitening to improve their smiles. They often read about natural ways to do this, or hear friends mention remedies they’ve read about online or in popular magazines. But what effect can they have on your pearly whites? Let’s take a look!

–Acids: using lemon juice or apple cider vinegar to whiten teeth has been around for a while. While good for the body, these substances are damaging to tooth enamel and consequently expose you to tooth sensitivity or cavities over time. While you can use them for teeth whitening, the damage to enamel just isn’t worth it.

–Abrasives: scrubbing your teeth with abrasive substances like activated charcoal or a baking soda and hydrogen peroxide paste can wear away tooth enamel and expose the yellower dentin layer below it. And according to the American Dental Association, there is no evidence that charcoal dental products are safe to use on teeth.

–Swishing: by now you will have likely heard of “oil pulling” or using turmeric powder to whiten your teeth. Again, neither have scientifically been proven to whiten the teeth.

To keep your teeth looking their best, brush and floss every day and see your dentist for regular cleanings. Scientifically tested products carrying the ADA Seal of Acceptance (whitening toothpaste, whitening strips) are proven to be safe and effective for teeth.
